So finally, the YouTube folks realized that not all YouTube users have lightning speed Internet connection which makes their YouTube experience a pleasant one. In the developing countries where YouTube is such a big hit, Internet connection is still a problem.
Case in point? – myself. Whenever I want to watch a nice video on YouTube, I need to let it stream from start to finish first before I can fully enjoy watching it by “replaying” the stream. That’s the only way I could, and perhaps everyone in developing countries, enjoy YouTube videos. Enter YouTube “Feather”, a lighter and faster version of YouTube site minus all the bling-blings.YouTube Feather is an experiment in progress. Google describes it as an ultra light watch page for YouTube. After everything that the YouTube engineers have done to make YouTube the best video uploading and sharing site with all the features they have introduced, YouTube Feather is the anti-thesis of it all.
YouTube Feather is a stripped-down version of the current YouTube. It will be an opt-in feature for now, and possibly in the future as well. Once you’ve opt-in for YouTube Feather YouTube videos that you will be watching will default to standard quality.
Meaning, everything will be kept to a minimum – simpler, faster, and quick video loading time.
I’m giving YouTube Feature a spin and have opted-in for the feature. But right now I don’t really see any improvement to the regular version of YouTube. Care to enlighten us YouTube?

Only last 10 comments, no comment form. Less options when grabbing the embed code (less .js to load for all the customisation options). Looks a lot more like Vimeo, the best video site, now. Just uglier. :)

Thanks Franky. Hopefully the lesser features will result to faster load time. But based on my initial observation, it didn’t improve a bit on my side.

YouTube on a diet? The way the site has been going, it’s positively anorexic. Stripped of bulletins, downgraded to beta, not even listing the number of videos watched anymore and, now, out with the comments and ratings?! Talk about going downhill. As far as I’m concerned, the premise of faster loading videos is just a front for further reducing user interaction, given what Feather removes from the video viewing experience. YouTube is not know for benevolence towards the masses and this venture shouldn’t be taken at face value. It’s not what it claims to be.
