A few months after we informed you that the online drama series Quarterlife is the first of its kind to make a jump to a major TV network.
It will now go on-air today, February 26, 10:00 PM at NBC but its regular time slot is every Sunday, 9:00 PM starting March 2. Quarterlife takes on the ongoing stories of six creative people in their twenties when so many of life’s important decisions are made. If successful, this will open more lucrative opportunities to the creative people thriving in online communities.
The big challenge now is if Quarterlife can duplicate its online success to TV screen or lose its magic touch. Viewers are very fickle so it’s really hard to tell if this will gain traction. Sometimes it’s better to leave things alone while it’s successful. Then again, this is a very tempting gamble which can alter our viewing experience.
According to a news article, Quarterlife had entered the TV screen as an ABC pilot in 2005 but failed to generate interest. In the words of its producer Marshall Herskovitz, “There are a lot of different aspects of this generation that we kind of missed in that (earlier) pilot. And the sum total was that even though I loved the cast and it had a nice feel to it, you didn’t have any emotion at the end of it.”
They then reworked the script and focused on people in the online community to capture the creative and passionate people. The rest is history.
So, let’s keep our fingers crossed for Quarterlife and hopefully it will lead many online series directly to our TV screens.
