Blog search provider Technorati has acquired Personal Bee, an unknown news aggregator for under $1 million.
According to Valleywag, Personal Bee’s founder will come in as VP of business development at Technorati and the acquisition will allow Technorati to build Techmeme style pages.
My question is why? I can buy access to Megite’s code for $10k (at least that’s what they’ve previously offered me for it); why buy a crappy looking news aggregator when the barrier to entry in terms of doing it yourself is very, very low? Weird.

Megite code? No, not megite source code. Of course, you may get a binary version with some limitations. Does any company want to acquire Megite:)

Sorry, should have been clearer, you can license Megite’s source code for a site for $10k, at least that’s the price they offered me last year when I was trying to get a meme tracker up and running. Too much for my budget, but a bargain in comparison to what Technorati just bought.

I talked with the Personal Bee guys back when they were still in beta (this past year) and they have some cool technology. Essentially their bread and butter is the ability to automatically define and extract tags, key phrases, and links from your content without you lifting a finger. So if you were to talk about maybe venture capital funding that a particular company received, even if you hadn’t tagged your entry at all, it’d extract tags like VC, investment, the company, the investors, and then could add in other tags that are related to your article.
