Google Voice Web App for iPhone and WebOS Rolled Out

Google has just rolled out the Google Voice web app for iPhone and Palm WebOS devices – providing a fast and versatile mobile application that utilizes the lighter and fast loading HTML5 standard.

Of course, the best part about this is the fact that you don’t have to download anything and install a new app on your phone. You simply visit the Google Voice mobile site at http://m.google.com/voice and you’re good to go – that is make calls from your phone showing your Google Voice number as the caller ID. The Google Voice web app also lets you listen to voicemail and read voicemail transcripts, send and receive text messages for free and make international calls at low rates.

But then why not make it a native phone application like Google Voice for Android? Well, you have to contend to Google’s reasoning that creating a web app for Google Voice for iPhone and WebOS has its many advantages. Some of which allows you to store data locally without losing it when you close your phone’s browser.

I really would like to try Google Voice both on my iPhone and Nexus One but unfortunately the service is currently open to U.S. users only. How about you? Have you used Google Voice, either for Android, iPhone or WebOS? Share us your experience and make me envy you.

Palm Unveils Pixi Plus, Pre Plus, and 3D Games for Palm Pre

It seems that Palm including its WebOS has just been reborn. Thanks to the CES 2010, Palm is bringing out some new good things up on its sleeves.  First is the launch of two new Palm smartphones – the Palm Pixi Plus and Palm Pre Plus. And second, some new  3D games are now available for Palm Pre.

Palm Pixi Plus features a nice streamlined design with simple navigation, 16GB of storage and a Touchstone Back Cover available in four colors – pink, green, blue and orange. While the Palm Pre Plus also have similar features with the addition of Wi-Fi connectivity. Both Palm smartphones will be available on January 25 on Verizon Wireless.

In addition, Palm also launched a new webOS app called Palm mobile hotspot. This app lets you turn your Palm Pixi Plus or Palm Pre Plus into a mobile Wi-Fi router. Up to five Wi-Fi enabled can access the internet through the Palm smartphone serving as a router.

As for the 3D games, Palm also announced several new 3D games which are available right now for download to the Palm Pre phone series. These 3D games include Need for Speed Undercover, The Sims 3, MONOPOLY, Asphalt 5: Elite Racing, Let’s Golf, Glyder 2 and X-Plane.

With the smartphone market heating up with the release of the Nexus One, and the iPhone still up and about, it’s a good thing that Palm is awakening from a deep slumber.  These developments will certainly help them catch up with the iPhone and possibly prevent the Nexus One from getting to much of the smartphone market share.

HP’s WebOS Now Open Source

Hewlett Packard’s exit from the tablet market was quite a jolt even though a lot of people already predicted that it was inevitable. One of the fallouts of HP’s move was that the operating system that they bought from Palm for $1.2 billion, WebOS, was suddenly placed in limbo. HP finally addressed the issue when it announced that it has decided to release WebOS as an open source software.

HP’s decision to turn WebOS to the public was a bit of a shock. Most people were speculating that the company will just sell it to recoup some of its investment. Others thought that HP will just totally mothball the OS. HP’s decision leaves many to conclude that it still believes in WebOS and that it will benefit from open source development. [Read more…]
