A new tablet is being scheduled for release and this one will offer a completely different experience and environment from the ones we have been used to.
The new tablet, called the Spark, was announced by the lead KDE hacker Aaron Seigo. The new tablet will run an open source Linux operating system. A Linux powered system tablet will definitely be welcomed by the developer community and also by users who do not want to be burdened with using a proprietary system even if it’s free.
The Spark will be operated by a variant of MeeGo that has been community developed called Mer. The Plasma Active user interface will be put on top of Mer as the visual and user interface.
The Spark will certainly attract people who want to use a device that can be loaded with a lot of free software that can be modified too without any worries of lawsuits. The Spark’s bootloader will also not be locked which will make it very easy to install other operating systems that the user might want.
The specs of the Spark won’t exactly turn heads. It has a 7 inch screen, a 1Ghz ARM processor, about 512MB of RAM, a 4GB internal memory and a Mali-400 GPU. There’s even talk that the screen resolution may only run at 800 x 400. But with a retail price of possibly $260, it’s surely a winner in the price department.
