In an earlier article here in 901AM, we talked reported on survey results that more and more people are relying on the cameras on their phones in favor of point and shoots for taking photos on the fly. That report showed that current technologies are making the built in cameras on phones perform almost at par with stand-alone cameras. But Sony has announced a new technology that will still narrow that gap between built-in cameras and stand-alone cameras some more.
Sony announced that it has developed a new backside illuminated CMOS image sensor that the company says “embodies the continuous evolution of the camera.” The new CMOS sensor from Sony is said to be thinner, smaller, and ligher than the existing CMOS sensors in the market today.
The new CMOS sensor uses a new stacked design that Sony says dramatically improves the sensor’s light sensitivity. The new sensor will also reduce the noise that is commonly seen from the cameras installed in smartphones, which is done through Sony’s RGBW coding functionality. Users will also see a marked improvement in the HDR Video capture feature – with more accurate and high resolution colors that can be noticed even in bright light conditions (an environment that typically results in washed out colors. The new CMOS sensor will also require less power and will be faster as well, which will make for faster camera adjustments, an improvement that smartphone users have long been asking for.
