Samsung officially announced the next generation of its popular oversized smartphone the Galaxy Note at an event held in Berlin, Germany. The Galaxy Note 2 is seen as an overall improvement over the niche-making Galaxy Note.
The Galaxy Note 2 now sports a slightly larger touchscreen at 5.5 inches. The first gen Galaxy Note had a 5.3 inch touchscreen. But even with the slightly larger screen, the Galaxy Note 2 has gotten thinner at 9.4mm and also taller. The reason is that the new screen has also gotten taller and wider with a 16:9 aspect ratio. The Super AMOLED screen has a resolution of 720p.
The accompanying Note 2 S Pen, which is one of the stars of the Galaxy Note series, has also been improved. Samsung has made the Note 2 S Pen more sensitive. It now has 1024 levels of sensitivity, 400 percent more sensitive than the original pen. To make it more ergonomically more pleasing, it now has a rubber top and an improved grip.
In order to match the increased sensitivity of the Note 2 S Pen, the Galaxy Note 2 now has new hover features. This feature mimics the movements of a mouse hovering over something. With this hover feature, you’ll get a pop-up preview of an email or photo if you hover over it. Additionally, there’s now a new feature where you can write short notes on the back of photos. You can also draw or cut and paste images with the S Pen when you write emails on the Galaxy Note 2.
Under the hood, the Galaxy Note 2 is an impressive machine. It runs Android Jelly Bean, it is powered a by a 1.6Ghz quad core processor, and it has 2GB of RAM, a 16 to 64GB of internal memory, 4G LTE, 3,100mAh battery, microSD slot, 1.9 megapixel front camera and an 8 megapixel rear camera.
No pricing has been announced yet but expect to see this phone by October.
