There are “reports” that Android has reached a new milestone as far as the number of apps are concerned.
According to Business Insider, Android now boasts a healthy 250,000 apps compared to Apple’s 350,000 apps, putting the mobile OS within range of iOS.
While it’s expected that Android will eventually have more apps as the OS gains popularity worldwide, I am a bit skeptical about these numbers overall. [Read more…]

Based upon Apple’s previous schedule one should take this report with a huge grain of salt.
However considering the news is from Jim Dalrymple (who has a solid reputation according to Gruber) Cupertino might be throwing everyone a curve ball.
At past WWDCs, Apple might show off a new piece of hardware, but Gartner analyst Michael Gartenberg warns about getting too caught up in the past.
“You get caught up in patterns, and it holds true, until it doesn’t,†Gartenberg told The Loop. “There is no reason for Apple to follow a predictable yearly pattern, and it keeps their competition off guard a little bit.†(The Loop)
Although rumors abound that Apple will release an update to iOS, the company might be delaying iPhone 5’s release in order to not upset Verizon iPhone 4 owners (who just purchased the device in February of 2011).
If the report turns out correct, then we may see Apple release iPhone 5 later on in the year (with some speculating a September launch along side the rumored iPad 3).
While this news would disappoint millions of users (this author included), it could give rivals like Nokia and Microsoft some breathing room, not to mention manufactures of Android devices as well.

Unfazed by the iPad 2 juggernaut, Microsoft is attempting to enter the tablet arena with a touch screen device of their own (albeit a little late).
Microsoft Corp., the world’s largest software maker, won’t release a competitor to Apple Inc. and Google Inc.’s tablet operating systems until the 2012 back-to- school season, people with knowledge of the plans said. […]

While it’s understandable why Microsoft is making a tablet that supports their full fledged OS, it’s unclear whether doing so would make the company competitive against Apple.
Such a device would probably be well north of $1,000 USD, making it more expensive than many laptops as well as some of Apple’s notebooks (not to mention iPad 3 which will probably be out by then).
Unless Microsoft can convince developers to optimize their software for the device at launch, the software giant will run into the same problems facing HP’s TouchPad and Motorola’s Xoom (hint: a great OS with very few tools).

Ever since the search engine giant announced their Google Fiber project, cities around the US performed various stunts in order to get Google’s attention.
Google was suppose to announce a winner by December of 2010, but decided to push back the announcement in order to gain more time researching every city who applied.
Although Google has not indicated an official date of when the winner would be announced, it’s probable that the winner will be revealed next month (at least according to an archived blog post). [Read more…]
