China Now Gets More Smartphones Than The US

Everybody knows that it was really inevitable.

In a recent survey conducted by Strategy Analytics, a respected research company, it was determined that China has now overtaken the United States in the total number of smartphone shipments. Shipments of smartphones to China reached 23.9 million devices in the third quarter of this year, compared to the 23.3 million that was shipped to the United States. The increase in smartphone shipments to China was 58 percent over the figures posted in the second quarter, which is phenomenally significant. Compare this to the United States where shipments dropped seven percent for the same period. [Read more…]

Dell Retreats from US Tablet Market

One of the companies that entered the internet tablet market is the global computer manufacturing giant Dell. As I mentioned in yesterday’s article on the BlackBerry Playbook, breaking into the potentially lucrative tablet market is hard and more companies have failed than succeeded. Dell has acknowledged that it has also failed in its bid to become a competitive player in the market when it announced that it is getting out of the US tablet market.

Dell has stopped selling the Dell Streak 7, the company’s last remaining tablet model being sold in the US market. Last August, Dell discontinued the sales of the Dell Streak 5. The company’s Dell Streak 10 was never released in the US and may not be released at all given the turn of events. It is, however, being sold in China. [Read more…]

New Nano-SIMs to Enter The Market by Next Year

SIM cards are an integral part of mobile phones and even though it is one of those use it and forget it pieces of technology it is also evolving as new technologies emerge to change it. The SIM is now poised for another evolution as a new one is going to be introduced very soon.

The new SIM, called the nano-sim, will be introduced by Gieseck  & Devrient (G&D), the same company that released the first commercial SIM card two decads ago. The nano-SIM is slated to be displayed to the public at a trade show that will be held in Paris from November 15 to 17. [Read more…]

Adobe to Stop Development of Flash for Mobile

Adobe will not be supporting Flash for mobile anymore.

This was inadvertently revealed through a memo sent to analysts. The memo was acquired by ZDNet. In the memo, Adobe mentioned that development of Flash for mobile browsers will be effectively stopped and all efforts will be refocused on developing for HTML 5. The rumor became an actual reality when Adobe officially announced that it will indeed stop development of Flash for mobile devices saying that moving forward, HTML 5 is the best solution for “creating and deploying content” across different mobile platforms.
