Expect Windows 8 phones to start popping up in stores by next month, that is, right after Microsoft’s official launch even for its smartphone lineup on Monday. As expected, people will probably think that the Windows 7.5, the old mobile OS, is now effectively abandoned. But Nokia doesn’t think it should leave Windows 7.5 just yet.
The company thinks that Windows 7.5 is still a viable OS in terms of public acceptance and consumption that’s why, instead of abandoning it in favor of Windows 8, it is coming out with a new entry-level phone that will have it as an operating system.
The Lumia 510 is Nokia’s new entry-level Windows phone, and although its numbered lower than the Lumia 610, it actually has one feature that’s better than the latter, the screen size. The Lumia 510 has a 4 inch display with a 480 x 800 pixel resolution, which is the same as the Lumia 610 but then this phone only has a 3.7 inch screen. The processor of the 510 is a Snapdragon S1, which many think is practically the same as the MSM7227A chip that is found on the 610.
The Lumia 510 has a 256MB RAM, quite a low one, so you’re sure many apps may not be able to work properly with the phone. As for storage, it has 4GB of internal storage and a free 7GB of cloud space via Microsoft’s SkyDrive. The camera is 5 megapixels but will only shoot VGA video. It also has GPS running with Nokia Maps, Bluetooth 2.1, FM Radi, a 3.5mm earphone jack and a battery rated at 1300mAh.
The phone will be initially released in India and China this November. Expect to see it in other countries soon though. The price for the Lumia 510 has been announced at $199.
