A decade ago, having a mobile phone was considered a status symbol. Not everyone can afford them then. But now, mobile phones are so ubiquitous it’s not unheard of for a person to carry more than one phone. Mobile devices like phones and tablets are encroaching on our lives in a huge way.
Network company Cisco recently conducted research on mobile devices and according to its findings, sometime this year there will be more mobile devices being used on earth than there are humans. This means there will be more than seven billion mobile devices on the planet by the end of the year.
The research indicates that there is no signs of this trend slowing down. With emerging markets getting more connected at ever faster rates, expect to see numbers rise. Another contributing factor is that at some point, people will also start carrying tablets alongside their mobile phones. Cisco’s research indicates that by the year 2016 there will be about 10 billion mobile devices that will be used by the world’s population, which will be pegged at around 7.3 billion by that time. The massive consumption of mobile devices is a trend that tech companies will surely take notice of. Expect these companies to start formulating ways to get more business from consumers.
One of the things that will surely change with more people carrying mobile devices is connectivity. Currently, 4G is only used in 0.2 of mobile connections. But despite that, it is used in 6 percent of mobile data traffic. Additionally, the Cisco report showed, 4G connections account for 28 times more data traffic when compared to a non-4G connection. With rumors that the iPad 3 will support 4G, expect data traffic to increase some more.
