After being abandoned by Nokia, many assumed that MeeGo would fade into obscurity, especially with Android and iOS dominating the mobile landscape.
Although lacking the backing of one of their parents (note: Intel still believes in MeeGo), the “Android challenger” may live on in the far east.
Mobile handset makers like LG Electronics are moving toward adopting Linux-based MeeGo operating systems after Nokia abandoned it and opened the way for rivals, one of the project’s leaders said. […]
This week LG Electronics joined a working group to develop a handset version of the software, joining companies like ZTE and China Mobile, Halla said. (Reuters)
While this news confirms that MeeGo is all but dead in the west, the platform does have a chance for survival by courting emerging and established markets in the east.
However with Android also courting emerging markets, MeeGo needs to launch with a bang in order to catch the attention of consumers, let alone developers.
With smartphones capturing 20 percent of the mobile market, MeeGo’s chances for success look good (at least on paper).
However unless advocates can improve the OS and match up MeeGo with some decent hardware, MeeGo fans may only be postponing its demise.
