Mashable.com announced the opening of nominations for its first annual Open Web Awards, created to recognize and celebrate the best online communities representing Web 2.0 technologies. This will be the first online, open collaboration awards event to use widget technology to collect votes from all over the web. This unique approach will enable partner blogs and websites from multiple countries to take part in the voting process and allow their global readers to nominate their favorite Web 2.0 sites. Winners will be announced on December 20, 2007.
The Open Web Awards will consist of three rounds of voting, starting with the first round on November 27th that will have open nominations for 13 different categories, including Mainstream and Large Scale Networks, Applications and Widgets, Social News and Social Bookmarking, Social Search, Sports and Fitness, Photo Sharing, Video Sharing, Start Pages, Places and Events, Music, Social Shopping, Mobile, and Niche / Miscellaneous Social Networks. The deadline for nominations is Wednesday, December 5, 2007. The second round of voting will narrow the selection of contenders to the top 10 in each category. The final round of voting will determine the Open Web Award winners, who will be announced on December 20, 2007 at Mashable.com. There will also be a Judge’s Choice winner for each category selected and voted upon by the individual blog partners.
The online event will be followed by a live award ceremony in San Francisco on January 10th at the Palace Hotel. Online event partners and
industry leaders will be in attendance at the invite-only celebration to recognize the winners of each category of the Open Web Awards.
