The amount of lawsuits that we’ve been reporting here at 901AM is getting to be quite a lot. But then lawsuits are very interesting news to say the least. We’ve reported significantly about the constant exchange of lawsuits between Samsung and Apple. So any new lawsuits are kind of a breath of fresh air.
For example, Research in Motion is also embroiled in some legal kinks. A company, BBM Canada, has filed a lawsuit against RIM claiming the mobile phone manufacturer and service provider is infringing on the trademark of BBM Canada by using “BBMâ€, which stands for Blackberry Messenger, which is RIM’s very popular mobile messenger service that is used by Blackberry phone users all over the world.
BBM Canada, which is a TV and radio audience data firm, is planning on filing the lawsuit in Federal Court within the next two months. According to BBM Canada, RIM should immediately stop using BBM for its service. But the company said that it is also looking into changing the BBM Canada name if RIM will offer a monetary incentive for them to do so.
According to Jim MacLeod, CEO of BBM Canada, the company’s position is one of practicality. They know that RIM “operate worldwide.†But MacLeod said that they are also not prepared to just walk away from their name.
Even though more people worldwide know of RIM’s BBM, it is BBM Canada that has existed longer. In fact, it was established in 1944.
