Recently redesigned eMoms at Home have some great tips up on things to think about before hiring a designer. If all my clients had read and followed that list, my life would have been a lot easier. Luckily, most people know what they want.
While I agree to most of the things on the list, I would also like to point out that sometimes it’s a good idea to trust in the designer. While s/he still needs to know what you’re after with your redesign, you should accept the fact that the designer is the expert. At least let’s assume s/he is… Anyway, be open-minded to suggestions and do your best to give constructive criticism when you disagree. In the end, the choice of design is yours to make, but the sooner you realize that you might (or might not) be the weakest link in the chain, the better in the long run.
You also have to accept that sometimes you and the designer just isn’t right for each other. Be it personal chemistry or to big a differ in style. I’ve yet to experience that myself, but I can certainly see it happen, especially with less talented designers that just can’t pull off your vision. That’s where that “browse the portfolio” advice from the eMoms post comes in again. You’re not just looking for design you like, you’re looking for ingenious solutions and clever adaptations. Just because a designer just have dark designs in his/hers portfolio doesn’t mean that s/he isn’t capable of doing glossy bright sites.
Hiring a designer is hard work, but if you’re lacking the talent yourself and you’re serious about your online venture, you really should. It usually pays off pretty quick.
