Google to rule the Earth

aiIn a speech Friday night to the Annual American Association for the Advancement of Science conference, Google co-founder Larry Page let slip with a truth we all suspected:

“We have some people at Google [who] are really trying to build artificial intelligence (AI) and to do it on a large scale…It’s not as far off as people think.”

Yep, you read that right, Google is trying to build real AI. The worlds most dominant online company, with the largest conglomeration of computing power the world has ever seen, is trying to build artificial intelligence, and according to Page it isn’t that far away either. The term Googlebot is about to take on a whole new meaning, and in the not to distant future as well.

But Google is a good company, you may well say, after all Do No Evil is the company mantra. But true artificial intelligence not only has serious ethical and moral implications, self aware intelligence may also not be controllable, after all it thinks for itself and makes decisions based on that reasoning, as we all do. What if Google creates AI with the logical reasoning of Hitler or Stalin? or even George W Bush?

  25. Selfimproving is something that we can discuss for days. . . . it’s already being proved that computers can’t find all the bugs in a program. . . so how can a computer self-improve? in a sense i see it can tweak parameters to get a better result. . . but can it devise a new algorithmes?
    I was in favour of strong AI, but as i was delving into programming these machines to do the dumpest of all (read), I’m discovering how difficult this can be!

  28. Google Is skynet… They may have the “do no evil” and im sure they beleve it, but creating AI can only end in bad times for humanity. Take a outside look at all the “good” mankind has done for the world we live in….. i still can’t see any. We have to face it that from another non-human perspective we do not live in harmony with the enviroment in which we live and would probably be seen as a a sort of plague. But hey, if it does happen at least we have a man in power who knows all the lines.

    Yeah, right…

    It clearly depends on what you are learning the robot… Intelligence is only intelligence, when it has something to compare to…

    For instance; killing a cow is no illegal, killing a human is, or rare animals, but isn’t it also legal to “kill” artificial intelligence? It can only compare to words, and written text, thus don’t understand how to live or die…

    Let me give you an example; if you build a robot that deny to get shut down, you got ethical problems, but only if it learned to do that reasoning on it’s own, meaning that you did never program it to do so…

  39. Who says that artificial intelligence has to be derived from one source? Perhaps when everything on the ionternet is linked together, we may inadvertantly create the conditions for a global consciousness to develop. Perhaps the idea of a “Skynet” type intelligence is not so far adrift. What would we do if this happened? try to control it? Destroy it? Turn it off? isolate it? Give it help to develop? give it more power in exchange for something that only it could offer? Have we already started the move towards this AI in a global form?

    So much food for thought. So much to watch for. So much to “HOPE” for.

    Who really controls the internet then, man or machine? How would we know if we are being watched after all:

    “Who would have believed that we were being observed” War of the worlds, Perhaps we are being observed even now. Perhaps the observer is learning all that it needs to know to take control, slowly and inevitably. After all, the internet is not governed by the same rules as we are. It does not only have its 3 score years and 10 to live its existence. If it can learn and grow 4000 times faster than us and live forever, always learning and growing, how long? How long? How long until we no longer know the difference between what we designed and what it has become. We all forget the further from the start point we go. Look at how easily the real horrors of warfare can be forgotten by the masses, when they are not confronted by it.

  40. Man! all you girls who are crying about AI – stop whining. One thing that is lacking for AI is creativity. Sure it can probably work out game plans etc – but to be creativity or have lateral thinking is another matter and I think that’s what the author is trying to get at (being self aware and all).

    To those who think that AI can evolve from data like protozoans from primordial soup are wrong as it just can’t work like that (plus you need millions of years). AI has to be derived from one source as there would have to be original code to start the thing ‘thinking’. (Unless you’re living in the land of Hollywood or if you’re Johnno). I bet most of the people here haven’t even programmed (write software) before let alone have an educated definition of what artificial intelligence is. As for being observed on the Net – well Johnno you’re a bit slow – we’re already being observed – they’re called ‘cookies’. Anyways if you haven’t ever heard of a term ‘neural networks’ then I suggest you stop talking about AI unless you want to embarrass yourself any further. (of course there’s nothing stopping you from self-educating yourself).

    If google ran the world,, haha, what if I farted and it took over the world by the smell of it, i mean ya know, i did just think of that, so lets talk about that ok?!?!I I mean , why not, its just about as a great subject as this google robot yeaA?
