Apple is the acknowledged market leader when it comes to tablet sales. Its iPad has reinvigorated the tablet market and has spurred its growth. Amazon may just have entered the tablet market this year – specifically last November – but it is already making a lot of headway with its Kindle Fire tablet. With the tablet market being dominated by these two companies, along with Samsung, it’s inevitable that another company will want to join in and try to get a slice of the tablet market pie. It isn’t a surprise that one of those companies is Google.
If we are to believe what Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt told the Corriere della Sera, an Italian newspaper, Google could be brewing plans to release a Google tablet. In the newspaper he was quoted as saying, “in the next six months we plan to market a tablet of the highest quality.†Schmidt then said that it will be in Google’s best interest to release a high quality tablet because it will significantly increase the heavy competition between Apple and Android, which Google owns.
There are some parties who are saying that Schmidt’s statements may not really reveal what Google is planning especially since the quote was just a translation using Google’s own translation service. But if it turns out to have some kernel of truth it will mean that Google could be developing a tablet that it will hopefully launch by the first half of 2012. It remains to be seen if Google has a good formula for success if it enters the tablet market.
