It’s that time of the year again folks. Â Search engines are starting to release their yearly search zeitgeist. Bing already had their Top Trending Topics released a couple of days ago. Â Yahoo for its part has just unveiled a bigger Year-to-Year search trend report, complete with promo gigs that could give you a chance to win an iPod Touch. Aren’t you excited?
Anyway before we give you the details of Yahoo’s Contest let’s take a look at some of the highlights of Yahoo’s Year In Review.
Yahoo’s search trend report is categorized into several niches – Top Overall Search, Â Farewells, Sudden Fame, Mad Science, Obama in the House, Market Darlings, Financial Hangovers and Blogger’s Roll.
Under these categories are the top 10 searches conducted by Yahoo’s users all through out the year.
Of course the most important of these lists is the Top Searches of 2009 – and the no.1 most searched keyword in Yahoo Search is none other than – Michael Jackson. This is pretty expected since everybody was caught by surprise of his sudden death.
Following “Michael Jackson” as the most searched term was “twilight”, obviously due to the phenomenal success of the Twilight Book Series and the movie franchise that goes with it.
The rest of the top searches are quite interesting to note as all of them can be categorized as entertainment-related. Â Thus you have, searches for Naruto, Megan Fox, WWE,Nascar , American Idol, Kim Kardashian, and Runescape (these are in no particular order).
So, what does this say about search engine usage and users? I don’t know about you but the truth is staring right into our face – that is search engines are mostly used for non-economic and non-political searches.
The rest of  Yahoo’s Year In Review is highlighted in the attached video. Go watch it now. Before I forget, details of the Yahoo contest is located at the lower portion of this site.
