Microsoft, Yahoo back in negotiations

Microsoft announced today that the company is returning to the negotiations table with Yahoo but not actually going after its entire business.

“Microsoft is considering and has raised with Yahoo! an alternative that would involve a transaction with Yahoo! but not an acquisition of all of Yahoo! Microsoft is not proposing to make a new bid to acquire all of Yahoo! at this time, but reserves the right to reconsider that alternative depending on future developments and discussions that may take place with Yahoo! or discussions with shareholders of Yahoo! or Microsoft or with other third parties,” Microsoft said in a statement.

The system was able to find services where I used the same name as my Yahoo ID. (del.icio.us, FriendFeed, Pownce, tumblr and YouTube). My username for everything happens to be unique, but be aware that the system can pull profiles that are not really yours.

If you happen not to have any friends on these services (you loner!), you can use the MyBlogLog invite that automatically appears.

Does walking away mean that you lose?

Some quarters are insinuating that Steve Ballmer of Microsoft should go for failing to nail Yahoo. It’s as if the only way to level the playing field with Google is to get Jerry Yang and company. I don;t think so.

To stop, to retreat, and to take some breathing space can be good at times. I’m sure Microsoft can see that Yahoo is not confident with its future. It is even planning to sleep with its enemy (Google) for some advertising deal.

By retreating, by walking away, Microsoft can sit back and see Yahoo fall and come back for another round of acquisition bid. By then, shareholders themselves of Yahoo will push their company to accept.
