The Planet expanded its partner offerings with the addition of a new affiliate program, providing incentives for those interested in hosting to earn commissions simply by making referrals.

The Planet’s affiliate program provides competitive commission rates, which enable affiliate partners to earn money without having to bear the costs of owning and managing the customer relationship. Participants will have access to a dedicated affiliate team focused on making them effective with promotions, marketing materials and a specialized web site optimized for affiliate- referred traffic. An administrative portal tracks statistics, including traffic, conversion rates and payouts that are available at any hour of the day.

Microsoft announces new e-government platform

Microsoft Corp. announced a new strategy that will make it easier for governments to interact with citizens, streamline processes and, as a result, save time and taxpayer dollars. At the Government Leaders Forum-Europe in Berlin, Microsoft unveiled the Citizen Service Platform (CSP), an approach to help governments of all sizes more responsively deliver services to citizens via the Internet.

CSP is Microsoft’s strategy to support governments as they develop sustainable, flexible and extendable IT infrastructures with citizen service in mind. A recent report conducted by Capgemini, on behalf of Microsoft, found that although 80 percent of services to the public happen at the local level, the governments responsible for delivering those services have found it difficult to keep up with effectively increasing the efficiency with which they respond to citizen needs. The goal of the CSP is to close that gap through rapid solution development, customizable applications and the industry knowledge to keep pace with the sophisticated expectations of citizens in a technology-driven world.

Boingo selects JiWire to sell and serve Wi-Fi ads in major airports

Boingo has selected JiWire to sell and serve advertising on its Wi-Fi airport networks. Boingo users will see JiWire-supplied advertising throughout the Boingo Wi-Fi login process at 28 major U.S. and U.K. airports, including Atlanta-Hartsfield, JFK and LaGuardia in New York, Chicago’s O’Hare and Heathrow in London.

The JiWire Wi-Fi Advertising Network enables targeted delivery of premium advertisements based on the recipient’s location and device. As an example, the network will enable targeting of advertisements delivered to Boingo users at specific airports. Advertisers on the JiWire network include Charles Schwab, Microsoft, Nokia, and Toshiba.

Only 2.12 percent people use Internet in Pakistan

The Daily Times reports that Pakistan has only 2.12 percent of Internet users, leaving a vast majority of population without any knowledge of the web. 

According to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) Pakistan with a population of 164,741,924 have only 3.5 million Internet users. Pakistan Internet subscribers still rely on the dial-up connection.

Wahaj us Siraj, Convener of Internet Service Providers Association of Pakistan (ISPAK) said that these thwart figures are emerging as the government has never taken the IT industry seriously. The reasons of these dismal figures are heavy taxes on computers and accessories, which is creating a negative impact on the Internet subscribers’ base as the Internet users are directly related to the computer growth.

UK to fight terrorism via Internet censorship

terrorism.gifSubjected to several terrorist attacks after supporting the U.S. against Iraq and Afghanistan, the UK government wants to curb terrorists materials scattered over the Internet.

Following the initiatives against online child pornography, the only possible way is filtering Internet content. However, British Home Secretary Jacqui Smith did not cite the specifics of this plan.

However, it is only in China that Internet policing is enforced. Other countries tried this approach but the idea did not fly for it violates free-speech laws.

According to a news report, Smith disclosed the government is working closely with the Internet industry regarding the implementation of this plan. Britain’s Internet Service Provider Association, on the contrary, is afraid this might bring more lawsuits to the providers.

in spite of these potential problems, you cannot help but appreciate the effort of Smith and her tenacity to push the envelope.
