Yahoo to offer Rocketmail.com and Ymail.com email domains

Yahoo! Inc. is offering two new email domains that will give users the chance to register for the e-mail address or Yahoo! ID they have always wanted. Starting today, people can get a new Yahoo! e-mail address at ymail.com and rocketmail.com.

Yahoo! Mail is the number one Web mail service in the world with more than 260 million users worldwide. As a result of its global popularity, many desirable e-mail addresses have already been taken for the yahoo.com domain, as well as for localized versions of the namespace in countries around the world. With the two new e-mail domain choices, Yahoo! will make millions of new e-mail addresses available to the online community.

I have only one comment: Rocketmail is so 90’s.

Score One for the Bad Guys

Squiggly letters and jagged numbers might have already overstayed their welcome on the Web.  These annoying yet necessary human verification tests, which attempt to keep our personal information safe and blogs free of junk, have been defeated.

According to Websense, the security firm that has identified the hacking, warns that a computer was able to beat the system and proceed to create multiple Hotmail accounts in order to disseminate spam.

Similar attacks have recently occurred against Microsoft’s Live Mail accounts and Google’s Gmail and Blogger services.

Ferris Research, an analyst firm specializing in messaging and collaboration, estimates that spam (and preventative measures) cost the U.S. economy $42 billion annually.

Computers are looking more and more human everyday.  Beware.

Xoopit launches private beta of first application for webmail

Xoopit released the first product to bring the power of the social web to email by combining the benefits of social networks and media management within email environments. Xoopit finds the pictures, videos, and files buried in webmail’s gigabytes of free storage, and allows users to share, comment, and post them to their contacts on other social networks and blogs. The product was released in private beta with initial client support for Google’s Gmail and automatically imports shared media from the top photo and video sharing networks such as YouTube, Flickr, Kodak, Shutterfly, and Picasaweb.

The Xoopit beta is available as a Gmail plugin for FireFox, on iGoogle, and on the web. Over time, the company plans to expand its offerings to the top web mail systems including Yahoo Mail, Hotmail, AOL and the social networks.
