15 important things you need to know about American executives

necktie1.gifEver wonder what’s on the mind of your annoying boss? A survey by TheLadders.com, world’s largest online service catering exclusively to the $100k+ job market, reveals the how American executives feel about money, love, office politics and their prospects for getting ahead.

In summary, they say cash is king; secret crushes are commonplace; holiday parties can cause commotion; and Spanish skills are special. Here are the 15 things you must know about them:

  1. When it comes to MBA, 57% of executives said the advanced degree is nice, but not necessary in the real world.
  2. 61% of executives said it was Spanish, followed by 16% who chose Chinese.
  3. On stock options, 32.5% said stock options are an integral component to a pay package; 24.9% would prefer more cash; and 20.5% said options are “gravy” but not a big motivator.
  4. 70% of executives said the prospect of an overseas assignment would be an exciting opportunity.
  5. 75% of executives surveyed said physical fitness is critical for career success at the executive level.
  6. On office romance, 68% of executives said they’ve harbored secret crushes on their co-workers; 17% confess to having inter-office affairs. (how many are lying? Hehe)
  7. On power dressing, 79.1% of executives said they prefer to wear either business casual or outright casual attire for work and another 62% said that business casual is now standard office dress code.

3.6 million Brits to hit online stores on Christmas day

If you’re running an e-commerce store targeted to Brits then you better be prepared. According to the Interactive Media in Retail Group, approximately 3.6 million Brits are expected to shop online on Christmas day and spend about 14.56 pounds per person. Overall estimated online spending is 52 million pounds or $103 million.

Last year, there were 3.37 million Brits who shopped online while only 2.8 million went to Church of England service. Moreover, the research firm estimates that total online sales for the year will reach 53.3 billion pounds or 76% increase compared last year.

Better tools and methods await online advertisers next year

online-ads.gifChicago-based interactive marketing agency and online media expert Performance Communications Group (PCG) predicts 2008 is the good year for online advertisers given better methods and new tools to make effective campaigns. Here are some of their predictions:

  1. Intelligent banner ads will fix what ails poor campaign management. Media buyers who demand more control and disclosure on where, when and why their budgets are being spent will look to a new generation of ad banners that incorporate more intelligence, better multimedia and secure data capture.

  2. Online advertising evolves into social advertising. Facebook is leading the charge, despite their early stumble, in what could be the next evolution in online advertising. By uniting advertisers with social network members, Facebook is creating a system in which members themselves promote products. Word-of-mouth advertising, traditionally the best form of advertising because it involves personal recommendations, is difficult to predict and scale.

  3. Indirect distribution will dominate video consumption. Video has been a hot topic during 2007, with iTunes and YouTube dominating the direct video distribution market. However, as more companies utilize RSS and video web services, these forms of indirect video distribution will become the dominant means of online video consumption.

CNBC, Yahoo! enter global video distribution agreement

CNBC and Yahoo! Finance forged an agreement to distribute content from CNBC, CNBC Europe, CNBC Asia, and CNBC.com to Yahoo! Finance users in the U.S. and worldwide. The announcement represents CNBC’s first global online alliance, and Yahoo!’s first global finance video agreement.

Under the terms of the agreement, CNBC will provide video clips from its global networks and articles from CNBC.com. The content will be available to Yahoo! Finance users in the U.S., and will also be available to Yahoo!’s 21 international financial news sites. The video clips will encompass commentary and analysis of the day’s top business stories, pre-market opening buzz, interviews, investing and stock-picking segments from CNBC programs including “Mad Money with Jim Cramer” and “Fast Money” and international market news and analysis from CNBC Europe and CNBC Asia.

B2Bs to focus on online marketing next year

new media newsAccording to BtoB‘s “2008 Marketing Priorities and Plans” survey, about 60% of business-to-business companies plan to increase their marketing budgets next year and 30% will retain a flat budget.

Because most clients want access to information 24/7, about 80% of marketers intend to boost their online marketing budgets with customer acquisition as the primary marketing goal.

Average increase in online marketing will be around 33%. Here are the specifics:

Among the online areas that will see increases next year are: Web site development (cited by 74.0% of marketers), e-mail (70.1%), search engine marketing (64.3%), video (39.5%), webcasting (39.1%), banners (36.4%), sponsorships (29.6%) and social media (26.2%).

Event marketing is expected to be a major hit next year with almost half of the marketers allocating more money here.

Moreover, ad campaigns remain part of the priority list with about 70% of marketers planning to create new campaigns in 2008.
