Nielsen Online Releases Top 10 U.S. Social-Network and Blog Site Rankings for October

MarketingCharts reports the 10 leading social networking and blog sites for October 2007, based on the list by Nielsen Online. MySpace.com and Google’s Blogger.com remain the undisputed leaders among numerous social networking and blog sites today.

Despite the impressive and consistent performance of Facebook resulting to more than 19 million visitors or 125% growth, it is still a distant second place in the social networking category.

Although MySpace registered only 19% growth, its massive member base of more than 58 million is strong enough to hold its number 1 position.

However, sites Classmates Online, AOL Hometown, AOL People Connection, and Reunion.com all suffered a decrease in number of visitors.

The trend is quite similar among blog sites. As expected, Blogger.com retains its number 1 position and it’s still ahead by 20 million visitors compared with second best, WordPress.com.

The battle for 2nd place is a close struggle between Six Apart Type Pad and WordPress.com. In the September report, Movable Type was in second place. This month, WordPress has already overtaken Six Apart.

BlogHer tops 4 million unique visitors per month

BlogHer, Inc. announced that its network now receives more than 4.23 million unique visitors per month, making it one of the leading networks for women online. According to Nielsen Netratings, BlogHer.com and BlogHer’s publishing network of 955 blog affiliates achieved 4.237 million unique visitors and 17.7 million pageviews in September 2007. BlogHer.com’s 60 editors and BlogHer’s blog affiliates write across categories of interest to women online, including parenting, health, food, lifestyle, technology, business and politics, and all member blogs are continually vetted for content quality, category relevance, blog frequency and adherence to editorial standards.

BlogHer also brings its community members face-to-face by producing the world’s largest blogging conferences to mobilize, educate and inspire women. One thousand (1,000) bloggers attended BlogHer events in 2007, and the company recently announced expansion plans for 2008 that include the upcoming BlogHer ’08 in San Francisco (July 18-21, 2008), BlogHer Business ’08 in New York City (April 3-4, 2008) and the BlogHer Reach Out Tour, which will visit six different cities in the East/Southeast throughout October, 2008.

Perez Hilton in trouble again

901am.comAttorneys for Zomba Recording LLC, which owns the copyrights to Britney Spears’ recordings, filed suit in federal court in Los Angeles today charging the online gossip website PerezHilton.com and its proprietor Mario Lavandeira with illegally obtaining and posting recordings by Spears.

The suit accuses Lavandeira of infringing Zomba’s copyrights by posting at least 10 completed tracks and unfinished demos from Ms. Spears’ upcoming album, “Blackout,” over the past three months.

“Blackout” was originally scheduled to be released on Nov. 13 but because of internet leaks, Ms. Spears’ label Jive Records announced yesterday it was moving up the release date to Oct. 30.

The lawsuit does not specify the amount of monetary damages being sought but rather asks that Zomba be awarded both real and punitive damages as well as legal costs “as the Court deems just and proper.”

Perez Hilton brings celebrity juice to VH1 with ‘What Perez Sez’

Set as a series of specials revolving around major pop culture events, Perez uses his post-modern guerilla approach to give the audience his one-of-kind take on some of this year’s hottest happenings, and ultimately land some major celebrity interviews. Each special will be jam-packed with celebrities through field shoots, one-on-one chit-chats with the stars and red carpet interviews.

Viewers will get a sneak peek into the untamed world of Perez Hilton as he breaks the red tape surrounding Hollywood’s favorite stars. Throughout the show, the audience is presented with produced themed packages and non-traditional magazine segments. Set in Perez Hilton’s own wild and unscripted reality, viewers will also be exposed to his “professional,” and often irreverent take on all the most up-to-date and late breaking dish surrounding the event. “What Perez Sez” will feature recaps of what happened, and of course, the gossip gangsta’s thoughts on what really went down.
