AOL to release Open Mobile Platform

AOL announced that it will be releasing to developers its new AOL Open Mobile Platform. The new open platform will help stimulate innovation by providing developers with ready access to the tools and source code they need to build and distribute applications across all major mobile device platforms and operating systems including BREW, Java, Linux, RIM, Symbian, and Windows Mobile. As a result, developers will be able to create applications for a wide variety of mobile devices.

The AOL Open Mobile Platform is based on proven technology acquired by AOL that has been deployed across more than 150 different handsets on carrier networks in the U.S.

In addition, it will be possible to integrate applications built using the AOL Open Mobile Platform with third-party APIs, as well as with AOL’s open APIs for AIM, AOL Mail, AOL Video, MapQuest, Userplane, Truveo, Winamp, and others. The AOL Open Mobile Platform will also give developers the ability to monetize their mobile applications by utilizing advertising resources, such as clickable banner ads, provided by AOL’s Platform-A.

AOL launches new website in Australia

AOL announced the launch of a new website in Australia. The site offers AOL’s suite of communications products, advanced video search, media player, and content focused on information and entertainment. AOL.com.au users will also have access to a search engine powered by Google, the Internet’s leading search engine.

The launch of AOL Australia furthers the company’s global strategy to have a presence in 30 countries by the end of 2008.

AOL has a global association with HP in 30 countries and is now extending this partnership to Australia. Through this partnership, AOL offers co-branded, localized versions of its portal, toolbar and search on HP desktops and notebook PCs sold worldwide.

AOL has a content-supply agreement with Fairfax Digital, Australia’s leading provider of online news and has partnered with Tempest Media, Australia’s largest online advertising network.

AOL and Zed announce global marketing partnership

AOL and Zed inked a marketing partnership that will promote their mobile products on their respective European and U.S. mobile and Internet sites. Under the agreement, Zed’s products will be promoted within AOL’s WAP portal in the U.S. as well as within AOL’s desktop destinations in Europe. Zed will promote AOL’s mobile products through its marketing channels in Europe.

Budweiser’s Rocky bags top spot in 6th Annual AOL Super Sunday Ad Poll

AOL announced that Budweiser’s Rocky commercial was the top ranked Super Bowl XLII commercial as chosen by viewers in the 6th Annual AOL Super Sunday Ad Poll. The poll, sponsored by Verizon, began shortly after Super Bowl XLII kick-off when viewers could watch and rank their favorite commercials.

Top Five Ranked Annual Super Sunday Ad Poll Commercials Include:

1 Budweiser: “Rocky”
2 Bridgestone: “Squirrel”
3 Coca-Cola: “Balloons”
4 Life Water: “Thriller”
5 E-Trade: “Baby”

The ads will be available online on AOL Sports for a week following the game.

AOL acquires Goowy

AOL has acquired Goowy, a start-up that specializes in widget and analytics applications. Financial details of the acquisition were not disclosed.

Goowy is also behind yourminis.com whic enables web users to search for widgets to install in their blogs, and Goowy Webtop, a package of consumer tools such as a multiple-network instant messenger, email, calendar, contacts, file storage and games.
