CMP acquires Think Service, Inc.

CMP has acquired Colorado-based Think Service, Inc., including HDI (formerly the Help Desk Institute), the world’s largest membership association for IT help desk and service management professionals and the premier certification body for the industry. This acquisition will broaden and deepen CMP’s services portfolio to encompass certification in addition to membership, training and events for IT support professionals and their respective corporate organizations.

HDI is an industry association dedicated to serving professionals in the IT support industry by providing access to industry publications and research and by providing a platform for continuous networking through more than 60 local chapters in North America. HDI offers training and certification based on internationally recognized standards.

Sun acquires MySQL for $1 billion

Sun Microsystems Inc. has agreed to buy open-source software maker MySQL AB for $1 billion. Sun is paying $800 million in cash and assuming $200 million in options for the acquisition. The Swedish company makes open-source database software used by companies like Google and Facebook.

“Today’s acquisition reaffirms Sun’s position at the center of the global Web economy. Supporting our overall growth plan, acquiring MySQL amplifies our investments in the technologies demanded by those driving extreme growth and efficiency, from Internet media titans to the world’s largest traditional enterprises,” said Jonathan Schwartz, CEO and president, Sun Microsystems.

Ticketmaster acquires TicketsNow

Ticketmaster of IAC, announced that it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire TicketsNow for $265 million.

Ticketmaster will create an integrated platform on which fans will be able to simultaneously review and compare ticket availability and pricing in the primary, premium and resale categories. Building upon its existing TicketExchange resale marketplaces and partnerships with the NFL, NHL and NBA, Ticketmaster will work closely with its venue, promoter, team and other live entertainment clients to offer ticket validation and electronic ticket delivery to fans purchasing in the resale marketplace. The acquisition will put Ticketmaster in colliding path with StubHub.

TicketsNow works with more than 800 professional ticket resellers that are vetted to ensure the highest levels of accountability and integrity.

Upon closing of the sale, TicketsNow will continue to operate from its Rolling Meadows and Crystal Lake, IL locations. Cheryl Rosner will continue as CEO, and the company’s current management team is expected to remain in place.
