When mobile phones were invented, it was to address one specific function – to make calls wirelessly wherever you are. With the evolution of mobile phones, more and more functions were added to it. With the latest generation of smartphones, a lot of functions have been incorporated into the device but at the disadvantage of other functions. Surprisingly, one of those functions is the ability to make calls.
A survey of 2,000 smartphone users recently conducted by UK based carrier O2, revealed that users of smartphones spend more time performing different functions with their mobile devices rather than making phone calls. The most common activity being done with smartphones is to surf the internet. The survey revealed that users average almost 25 minutes a day surfing. The second most popular activity is doing various social media activities, an average of about 17.5 minutes a day.
People listened to music or played games around 15 minutes a day. Making calls was the least performed function, with users jut making calls about 12 minutes a day. Other activities that are performed with smartphones include texting, watching video files (TV shows and movies), sending emails, reading ebooks and taking photos.
The results of the survey confirm how people perceive smartphones – a multifunction mobile device that has a ready app for each specific task they want to perform.
