I like to treat myself to an inspiring work area. That’s why my office has a nice red couch, gaming consoles although I don’t review much anymore, great speakers for my computers and stuff like that. I want to feel inspired to do things when I sit down in the morning with my coffee.
I also like to have great tools to save time as well as make it more fun to work. Let’s face it, it’s a lot more fun blogging on a MacBook than it is doing it on a crappy PC from 2001, with a flickering CRT monitor and a yellowish keyboard that should’ve hit the garbage bin years ago.
So I can understand why people want the Optimus keyboard, now available for pre-order at the bargain price of just over $1,560. For a keyboard, yes, that’s right. It is supposed to be the keyboard of course.
It’s a bit steep for me. I don’t mind paying a few grands for new equipment every now and then, but for just a keyboard? Nah, I’ll just stick to my wireless one.
Jason Calacanis might get it though. He might be on a blogging break, but he’s doing a lot of regular posting anyway. Maybe I missed that the break is over, I don’t know, and it doesn’t matter. One of his latter posts is about him willing to roll out $10k for a three monitor setup and asking his readers what they think. It’s a good way to collect opinions, and sure, I wouldn’t mind three Apple Cinema HD screens on my desk. I would have to go buy the MacPro but that’s OK, if Jason hawks the displays for me I’ll do the MacPro, no worries.
I totally understand why a designer gets a setup like that, I’d like one as I said but I just don’t make that amount of money (yet… call me Jason!). Now, I have no idea what this Project X-Kokoa thing that Jason is working on is, but as far as I know he’s no designer. I might be wrong on that one, do correct me, I can take it… Still, why would you need three Cinema HDs, or whatever 30″ monster times three he’ll go with if you’re not going to work, actually work, with designing web, print or video?
I’ll answer that question myself. Jason wants it because it’s great to have. He probably doesn’t need all that work area, but he can afford it and I take it he enjoys an inspiring workplace as much as the next guy.
Which would be me.
Now will you get that Optimus keyboard as well?

Maybe not the Optimus, that’s a little too expensive for me, but I am guilty of having a Logitech diNovo (G1). And it’s a pleasure to work with. And nothing beats a great mouse either.
If I have the money, I might… but for a keyboard? Nah, I can use that for my two kids.
