After launching the Blackberry Torch to the masses, RIM is now allowing new users to purchase their premier smartphone in two additional colors.
However the best news may not be the ability to purchase the device in a different skin, but also at a different price as well.
Best of all, the price has dropped from the original $200 down to just $99 for both the black and the coloured versions. Of course, you’ve been able to pick it up from places other than AT&T for that price for quite some time now, but an AT&T price drop may just mean you can find it for even less elsewhere. Reducing the price is a smart move for AT&T (as well as RIM), as it gives users a reason to purchase the Blackberry Torch over the iPhone 4 (which starts at $199 in the US).
Although the Blackberry Torch doesn’t hold a candle to the iPhone 4 (pun intended), the ability for users to purchase a white model (let alone red) will give users yet another reason to choose RIM over Apple, the latter who has yet to provide users with a white iPhone 4.
While entering a price war will probably not immediately halt RIM’s smartphone decline against rivals (as many corporate giants are defecting to Android and iOS), it may help Blackberry remain relevant choice in the future (at least among thrifty consumers).
