Technology And The Wisdom of Crowds

digg userTechnology firms are beginning to use prediction markets as a method to save money by harnessing the collective wisdom of their employees.

At a micro-conference that Yahoo convened at its headquarters here on Wednesday evening, representatives from Google, Yahoo, Microsoft and Hewlett-Packard described their experiments with prediction markets.

The companies are using these markets to answer questions like: ‘When will this software ship? And what will memory prices be like in a few months?’

The Fortune 500 Business Blogging Project

The Fortune 500 Blog Project is a volunteer-driven project started by Easton Ellsworth of Business Blog Wire, that aims to evaluate blogs that are owned and/or operated by Fortune 500 companies. The project also aims to find out to what degree these companies are using internal corporate blogs, and to highlight blogs that discuss these companies.

You can participate in this project by signing up, conducting research on Fortune 500 companies, and sharing this information with others. All the blogs currently part of the project are listed over here.

So how does the project work?

  1. Pick a Fortune 500 company. If someone has already picked that company, consider adding to their work.
  2. Search the Web for any public-facing blogs by that company or its employees.
  3. Analyze the company’s blog(s).
  4. Publish your findings at your blog.
  5. Link to your findings from this wiki. Examples of published research posts: General Electric and Ford.
  6. Repeat this process for as many companies as possible!

The Long Tail Of Advertising

Advertisments on Times Square can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, but still space is scarce and impossible to get. While advertisers pay to get their ads on Times Square, you are unknowingly helping them spread their ads all over the world.

As a result of the growing popularity of consumer-generated pictures, videos and e-mail messages on Internet sites like YouTube and Myspace, advertisers are getting consumers to essentially do their jobs for them.

One way that advertisers are able to balance the cost of advertising at Times Square is that advertisments at that location aren’t limited to that location any more.

“What happens in Times Square is no longer strictly the province of location. You can experience things that are happening there, even if you’re not there.”

This of course is done by tourists that share pictures through Flickr, videos through Youtube, and so on. So while advertisers are paying for advertisements on Times Square, they factor in the fact that you will help their ads propagate all over the world through social media technologies.
