If you think that just by building a good website or having good content, you can draw large audiences, you are mistaken.
The days of setting up shop and automatically getting traffic just by being online are over. Today, if you want to have success on the web you need a unique angle and a reputable brand so that visitors have something to remember you by.
If you want to get noticed, you have to build a brand that will draw the crowd in. And although traditional marketing techniques can be costly and take their time in producing results, this doesn’t have to be the case with the internet.
By using offline and online DIY (do it yourself) methods and some guerilla marketing techniques, you can build, announce, and control your brand without having to spend loads of money.
The following tips should help you get the word out.

Launching a successful blog isn’t easy (although some people make it seem effortless ;)). With the 60 million blogs in existence and the blogosphere doubling every six months, according to Technorati, its not easy to distinguish yourself from everyone else out there.
Thousands of new blogs are launched every day, but only a handful ever get read by more than a few hundred people, and even fewer ever make a dollar’s profit.

Mashable’s social networking awards are open for nominations. The awards will run from today to the end of next week, and the winners will be announced on Thursday, December 21st.
Here are a few things to keep in mind:
The Awards are not specifically for social networks launched in 2006. The networks don’t need to be US-based, but they should be open to registration from anywhere in the world and should have an English version available. You can nominate your favorite sites in the following categories. To nominate a site, put the site name and category in the comments. Alternatively, you can write a post on your own blog and trackback or link to this post. You can nominate one site in each of the twelve categories. Voting will begin on Monday night and continue until Thursday night.
The categories range from large-scale networks such as MySpace and Facebook, to niche networks such as Dogster and MothersClick, with 10 other categories in between.

Viral marketing refers to the exploitation of social media to propagate brand awareness through the internet via ‘self-replicating viral processes, analogous to the spread of a computer virus.’ The methods used include blogs, social bookmarking and networking sites, as well as online picture and video sharing sites.
This is great for advertisers because of the low costs (because the users do most of the work) and high and well-targeted market reach.
“All viral means is that you’ve created a message that people want to share,” says Gregg Spiridellis, who founded animation and design studio JibJab with his brother. “If people want to pass it along, that’s what brand marketing is all about.”
This phenomenon has in turn led to the rise of viral marketing campaign tracking and managing sites. One such site, The Viral Chart, allows you to manage, track, and seed your viral advertisement campaigns.
