Alabama Homeland Security takes down web site

homelandsecurity.jpgThe Alabama Department of Homeland Security has taken down a web site it operated that included gay rights, anti-war organizations, environmentalists, animal rights advocates, and abortion opponents in a list of groups that could include terrorists. The site identified different types of terrorists and included a list of groups it believed could spawn terrorists.

Jim Walker, Director of the Alabama Department of Homeland Security, said that he plans to put the web site back on the Internet, but will no longer identify specific types of groups.

Jobster launches career networking application on Facebook Platform

With Facebook Platform, Jobster now lets Facebook users tag themselves and their friends with words that describe their skills and experience. Jobster then suggests jobs that match those tags.

Site for sharing academic documents launched

scriptovia.jpgScriptovia.com, a Seattle-area startup, announced the launch of its network that allows students from all over the country to collaborate and share resources to help each other excel academically.

“The site is very similar technology to YouTube or Flickr, but for academic documents. In the Scriptovia community, students can post their schoolwork – essays, class notes, lab reports, presentations, and more – so that others can view them, discuss them, learn from them, as well as critique them,” Aseem Badshah, founder and president of Scriptovia.com said.

Scriptovia.com’s features can be used at every stage of the learning process, from the initial discussion of ideas and gathering information, through writing up notes and redrafting, to sharing the finished project and getting comments. Scriptovia.com also provides similar features to other social networking sites. Scriptovia.com members can create profiles, can tag each other as friends, send messages, and provide comments.

The Cambridge, Mass. company is an online community where you ask questions to the wis.dm crowd and get back useful answers. It is for people who are looking for something more meaningful than they get from “popularity” based social networks. It’s a place to engage around asking, sharing, growing and learning. It’s where you get to question everything.

BBC launches video channel on YouTube

bbc.jpgBBC has launched “BBC World News” in YouTube. The news channel is part of a non-exclusive partnership between BBC, BBC Worldwide, and YouTube.

Around 30 news clips, gathered from the BBC’s 58 international news bureaus and its 250 correspondents worldwide, will be made available every day. Users can select which of the latest BBC breaking news stories of their choice. They can also comment on clips, rate them and post their own video responses.

“The BBC has more journalists in more places than any other broadcast news organisation in the world. As part of our mission to find new ways to engage audiences around the world, we are delighted to be able to offer a dedicated BBC World News channel on YouTube that gives viewers the freedom to see our first-hand reporting whenever they want,” BBC Global News Development Senior Vice-President Michele Grant said.
