Nimbuzz to work without 3G or Wi-fi

Some months ago we covered Nimbuzz for the iPhone. The company now announced that they will also offer their service, even without available 3G or Wi-fi, after they closed a deal with Belgian service Voxbone. Thanks to the new offer from Nimbuzz, VOiP and Skype now also are available over 2G. The service will offer a local area number to call over 2G and then Skype contacts and VOiP is available. With the Skype application for iPhone you need to be connected to a Wi-fi network.

Nimbuzz is also available for several other smart phones such as the Nokia N97 and phones based on the Symbian platform.

Last.fm founders to leave the CBS ship soon

In a statement released today on the Last.fm blog 3 of the founders of the London (UK) based music discovery and recommendation service are leaving the CBSi Music company. According to the blog entry this is the latest (last?) step in handing over the reins to CBSi Media, who acquired Last.fm in Spring 2007 for $280million.

From the announcement:

After two years running Last.fm within CBS we feel the time is right to begin the process of handing over the reins. This is the latest stage in a long journey for us founders, which began in a living room in East London in 2002, and took us to the headquarters of one of the biggest media companies in the world.

Felix Miller also announced that the service more than doubled in number of unique monthly users over the last 12 months (Compete stats for last.fm top-url show an increase above 50% over the last 12 months).

Amanda Palmer is a self-promoter and has managed to create a genuine brand as a solo artist. She has 34.000 followers on Twitter and is one of the more active music artists on the network. Spotify to offer 320kb/s Ogg Vorbis support

Much hyped music-streaming service Spotify has announced in the support forums that they will be rolling out CD quality streaming for premium users.

This is a new feature that we will be rolling out later this week. We will offer premium subscribers the option to stream in 320 kb/s using Ogg Vorbis q9 codec.

This certainly will continue to grow Spotify’s popularity and will probably also boost the uptake of premium subscriptions.
