Ana Marie Cox, better known as the founder of Nick Denton’s political gossip beat Wonkette is now on Time Magazine’s beat. Reportedly she will be doing a weekly column on politics for the Web site and a monthly column in the magazine. This follows the arrival of Andrew Sullivan to Time as well.

Normally I would post something opinionated in this space. Today I won’t. Instead I will only remark that I am extremely unjealous. I mean I blog in a better space and I don’t have to pay nearly as much. It’s called my bedroom.

Ever wonder how a blog is made? Nick Denton, who owns the Gawker Media blogging company, has rented a storefront on Crosby Street for his new headquarters. It’s down the block from his loft, and it opens next week. As is his habit, Denton refuses to comment on the record, but this much is known: A plate-glass window will let passersby view the bloggers a-blogging, there won’t be cubicles, there will be sofas, and the walls will be green. How many bloggers actually show up to be watched is more difficult to predict, since the last office Denton rented, in a shared space called Meet-Up, was deemed by his staff too redolent of the expired hipness of the dot-com era to use (there was an on-premises Razor scooter). Denton’s fantasy seems to be a sort of ersatz nineteenth-century newsroom, where readers can gossip in person instead of merely e-mailing from their Gmail accounts. Bloggers will not double as baristas, since coffee won’t be sold.

The CIA wants to shut down former vets from having blogs. What’s next your not allowed to have a diary, or get married. Come on. I understand they don’t want folks sharing private data. But seriously this is annoying. But what else can you expect from a spy agency.
At one time I wanted to be in a spy agency. It was called the NSA. It’s hard to tell where the future of blogging will go. This is just the beginning of stricter blogging policies for the government and companies.

The CIA’s Publications Review Board is sending out terse reminders to agency veterans reminding them of the rules requiring that any writings–even blogs–must first get agency approval. Among those getting the warning is outspoken blogger and ex-agency man Larry Johnson, who smells censorship. “It’s very selective,” says Johnson, who has been critical of the CIA’s failure to defend outed ex-spook Valerie Plame. His note from CIA brass referenced his blogging. A CIA spokesman described the reminder as standard operating procedure. “Should anyone be surprised if CIA reminds people of the obligations they voluntarily assumed?” asks the agency in a statement. Ecto a popular desktop blogging client compatible with just about every blogging software on the planet has unveiled Ecto 2.0 beta for Windows. I run windows unlike Matt (the editor) and have been waiting for this new version to come out to test. I will be giving a decent review in a few days after trying it out.
