Blogs That Change The World – Edition One

We’ve all read ProBlogger,TechCrunch,Lifehacker, and blogs like this. But have you ever been gripped and emotionally challenged by people who are creating on their blog to really change the world in some awesome positive ways.

Ashley Cecil, The Painting Journalist world aids day is an artist located in Louisville,Kentucky who is an amazing painter, and uses her blog to share her paintings which are views of her world. She donates proceeds of her sales to charities that help make the world a better place.

She describes her gift in this way:

Welcome to the marriage of painting and social activism. I’ve been creating art ever since discovering that my mom’s Chanel lipstick made a great oil pastel. Through formal art education and years of professional experience, the adult version of this vocation has evolved into my own job title, “painting journalist.” I’m addressing philanthropic issues utilizing painting as my medium of communication. Much like a photojournalist, I travel to locations/events of cultural interest and capture them, only with my brush.

It’s Christmas time think about supporting bloggers, and a cool cause by buying a painting and helping out a work at home blogger and a charity of her choice. Talk about changing the world for better.

The State of 901am

Every so often I will chime in on how I plan to operate 901am. I view 901am as a ‘third place‘ industry site. With this third place mentality, it allows use to do some pretty awesome things. The key thing is this:

The bottom line is still the bottom. Market share will never be our passion here. We will never worry if we are catching the other guys. We will only worry if we are doing a kick-ass job of providing the lastest blogging and new media news all the while attempting to make a decent profit while doing it.

The Next Generation of New Media Producers

ipod generationJackson West, of Web Worker Daily brings out some cool numbers on a recent report (pdf) from New Media Age, a UK publication. He points out that the future generation of web workers could largely be dependent on mobile technology, social networking, and text messaging.

Most importantly, though, I like Jackson West’s analysis:

While … this is good news for the mobile music industry, what we see is a generation that takes their browsing home with them and are accustomed to always-on connectivity, instant access to content and mobile social networking. Getting them to sit quietly in cubicles may prove difficult.

Big corporations continue move to blogging and new media

intel blogsAccording to JupiterResearch, 34% of large companies have a weblog, but that number is expected to grow by the end of the year. In terms of company budgets for weblogs, 23% report budgets between $10,000 and $50,000 and almost 6% of companies surveyed say they have allotted $5 million or more to create and run one or more corporate weblogs. The research also finds that weblogs are unutilized for generating word-of-mouth marketing opportunities with only 32% of marketing executives using corporate weblogs to generate buzz around their products or services.

But why are some companies slow to embrace blogging? Is it about the unfiltered comments that could have an impact on their corporate image? Well maybe, but employees and customer feedback could prove to be far more valuable than they think.

Five years ago, I tried to coax Interactive Corp to move to the blogging culture. Today it would have been the market leader had it listened. I’m still preaching the same old things. Build community and the readers and customers will come. While companies like Apple can continue to avoid blogging, others like Sun Microsystems — and smaller businesses — really can’t if they want to compete in a global market.
