BBC to share video content with UK newspapers

Four of the UK’s major newspapers — the Daily Telegraph, Guardian, Independent and Daily Mail — will be able to embed some BBC video news content on their web sites, thanks to a new deal struck today.

bbc-logoContent won’t be exclusive, but instead editors will be able to choose videos from a number of subject areas — UK politics, business, health, and science and technology — which have already been published on the BBC Online web site.

The BBC may also roll out this service to other UK-based online news services in the future, with the initial publications chosen because they have a significant audience. [Read more…]

Vodafone UK offers “free Facebook” for customers

vodafone_logoWell isn’t Vodafone the friendly mobile phone operator at the moment? Not content with slashing mobile roaming rates (forget the fact that they’re unfair and should never have been so exorbitantly high in the first place) and offering up Twitter love to its customers, it’s now announced a week of free Facebook access for its users.

Yes, from Friday 24th July, for one week only, those with funky cell phones capable of viewing the web (the Nokia N97 for example) will be able to surf the social network for nothing.

Presumably, the hope is that you get so hooked that, when it stops being free, you’ll carry on and pay Voda’s data rates for the privilege. [Read more…]

Study: Big brands using Twitter to broadcast not engage

A recent study of 140 leading UK and global organizations with profiles on Twitter found that the majority are simply using it to broadcast their corporate messages rather than engaging with their followers and the wider community.

Just over a quarter of those surveyed adopt a very formal tone, while just a few are interacting well with fans and critics alike.

The amount of tweeting also varied hugely, from one extreme (BMW tweeted once a month when it started) to the other (Innocent Drinks tweeted up to 900 times in a week). [Read more…]

Shozu lowering cost of mobile multimedia sharing

shozu-swirlShozu, which connects mobile users with various social and media networks, has announced a partnership with MAXroam that will allow users to send multimedia files for much lower cost across 139 countries.

Initially marketed to iPhone users, who can download the ShoZu app for $4.99, the application will also be rolled out across Windows Marketplace, Ovi, and the BlackBerry App World (no Android Marketplace?).

Firstly, if you’re so inclined, you can host your life using ZooLoo’s services and your own domain name, making it more personal than using some-non-descript-name.forgettable-web-service.com.
