Samsung Increases Lead Over Apple in Sales

In the smartphone sphere, the two players that have a lion’s share of the market are Apple and Samsung. These two companies have been the dominant players in the global market and their respective sales numbers show that their competition is fierce with no true leader.

But a recent survey released by Reuters has revealed that Samsung may have finally widened its lead over Apple by a significant margin. The study was the result of a poll made involving 41 financial analysts. The analysts have observed that the tremendous interest the Samsung Galaxy S3 has been generating is the factor that has put Samsung over Apple in sales. From the period covering April 1 to June 30, Samsung has managed to sell over 50 million smartphones worldwide, which definitely dwarfs Apple’s own sales figure of 30.5 million smartphones. RIM To Cut 5,000 Jobs, Shows Poor Fiscal Performance

Research in Motion’s troubles look like it’s not going to ever let up. The BlackBerry maker has released details about its first quarter 2012 financial report and it just shows the extent of the bad situation the company is in right now.

First off, the company posted a loss of $0.37 per share on its total worth of $2.8 billion – a 33 percent drop from the $4.2 billion in revenues it posted in the quarter before it. The net loss RIM suffered was pegged at $518 million just for the quarter. To make a bad situation even worse, the company has announced that it will be cutting 5,000 more jobs as one of its strategies to try and save $1 billion. [Read more…]

“Distracted Walking” Accidents On The Rise

The saying “look before you walk” may be what a lot of people should be following, especially now that accidents are on the rise.

According to a report made by ABS News – which compiled the data taken by the Consumer Product Safety Commission – the incidents of “distracted walking” accidents has been on the increase. According to the report, about 1,150 people in the US had been sent to hospitals a year ago after they met with accidents while they were using their mobile phones. The figure may be considered insignificant considering the US is a country with 300 million people but it is statistically significant considering that the incidents of these kinds of accidents have increased by 400 percent over those reported over the last seven years. Free WiFi To Be Offered in Six NYC Subway Stations

More and more public areas are getting free WiFi as demand for connectivity to the internet increases. New York City is one  of the busiest and most cosmopolitan cities in the world but signals for phones and internet connections are still quite poor. But Boingo and Google Offers recently announced that it has partnered to provide free WiFi in six different subway stations all over New York City. Aside from the free WiFi in subways, 200 other hotspots all over Manhattan will provide Boingo services, allowing people to gain access to the internet all day. [Read more…]

New Survey Reveals Tablets Changing User Preferences for Reading

A recently released survey shows that tablets are now being used in favor of netbooks as mobile PCs.

A survey recently conducted by Gartner showed that tablets are becoming the choice of people who often read newspapers, books and magazines. The survey revealed that more than 50 percent of its respondents said they prefer to read on their tablets instead of traditional mediums. The exact nature of what tablets they use or prefer to use were not revealed. But the results show that people may not have completely shifted to tablets, but that undeniable shift is happening, with a “less paper” environment now being achieved, still a long ways away from the “paperless” utopia that some people have been predicting for decades now.
