Everyone has a phone number, an address. The list continues: a car registration number, passport number, shoe size, credit card number, insurance policy number – some people even have numbered accounts or a number for their vacation flight. What about websites and e-mail addresses?
Shouldn’t they have a dedicated number also? “It would be a lot easier”, thought a group of young people from Zurich who instantly followed up on their idea with the creation of the MyPageNumber.com, a site that assigns a number to your site or email.
The mypagenumber.com system is simple: On the homepage, there are fields filled with numbers. The numbers already taken are marked with the names of these holders. If you run your mouse over a field, the logo of the lessee is displayed – if they agree to it. Clicking on the field connects you directly to their respective websites and e-mail addresses.
If a number is still available, you can rent it for an annual fee. For unique number combinations, the company is auctioning it off to the highest bidder.
Editor’s note: This could have been a cool idea if… I can go directly to the site by just simply typing the number in my browser and not having to go to MyPageNumber’s site just to click on the number. For example, 64 is assigned to Hoch3 Web and Print but I cannot just type 64 in my browser because 64.com is a different site. Another thing, which should be basic, who are the people behind this? There is nothing in the site (from what I’ve seen) that tells me who they are and where they can be reached. Okay, enough said. I may be wrong and they may sell hundreds and thousands of numbers.

This is crap. It’s just a site that sells numbers! Then they simply inject a javascript that redirects the number to your site.

What a stupid idea. Domain names were invented so folks didn’t have to remember numbers. IP addresses anyone?

I’m with you Aaron. Our websites already have unique numbers called IP addresses.
