The collapse of many Web-to-doorstep delivery services including Kozmo.com, Urbanfetch, Webvan and HomeGrocer.com did not deter online retailer giant Amazon.com to venture in this segment.
To test the viability of this service, the company has launched a new Web site called AmazonFresh to some online grocery customers in Mercer Island, a Seattle suburb. Upon placing an order of grocery items or fresh produce, AmazonFresh will dispatch its delivery trucks from their distribution center in Bellevue to bring it in one-hour time slots.
They are also working together with local farmers and wholesalers to provide wide selection of organic, kosher, wheat-free and other specialty categories. However, Amazon spokesman Craig Berman did not confirm if this service will further expand in the near future.
