The Online Journalism Review has put together a great list of the top mistakes made by new online publishers.
- Doing it for the money
- Casting too broad a net
- Not being humble
- Taking spam personally
- Telling the world what you are doing… before you actually do it
- Throwing money at your site
- Using misleading traffic numbers
- Unrealistic goals
My personal addition:
9. Forgetting Why You Started
At times its easy to fall in love with the money, and then you lose track of why you are reallly in this. For me its all about the interaction. In the latter part of 2006 I had more fun just interacting than I have in a long time. So folks never forget why you got started. Whether that’s to spend more time with family, or more freedom, or to share your passions.
