The end is near my net book friends! It looks like K-mart (which is WalMart’s rival in the US) will be carrying Android tablets for a limited time.
But what is most suprising about this offer is the price, which is cheaper than the iPhone 4 (carrier subsidy and all).
If Android tablets are being sold at these prices, then consumers are going to have little desire to pick up a net book, especially when one considers that the former will have access to 100,000 apps (most of them being free).
Although K-Mart’s sale is geared more towards lower income Americans (as the more affluent will probably purchase a PalmPad or an iPad), the fact that Android Tablets can be made this cheap may seal the fate for net books in the future.
But if manufacturers can create Android Tablets (regardless of size) this inexpensive, one has to wonder how much the rumored Chrome OS tablets will cost (as the latter mainly runs a browser).
Either way unless net books find a way to re-engineer themselves, net books may end up joining the dinosaurs as yet another historical relic that just wasn’t strong enough to survive.
