MediaWiki is a well known open source wiki software. It was written to power the world’s largest wiki, Wikipedia, and still does. Wikipedia began running the wiki software in January 2002, although it didn’t become publicly known as MediaWiki until August 2003.
The name MediaWiki was coined by Daniel Mayer, and the original PHP script itself was developed by Magnus Manske, and rewritten by Lee Daniel Crocker. Brion Vibber would helm the ship and was the one responsible for the MediaWiki release.
MediaWiki runs on PHP and MySQL, and works in both Linux and Windows environments. The development of MediaWiki is a project run by the Wikimedia Foundation.
