Digg is a social bookmarking site originally launched back in 2004, by Kevin Rose, Owen Byrne, Ron Gorodtzky and Jay Adelson. It has become the social bookmarking site and a symbol of Web 2.0 in the industry. Digg focuses on technology related news, but has added categories for Sports so an expansion in content scope is to be expected in the future.
The concept is simple. Users submit stories to Digg, and if enough people “digg” the story, it will be displayed on the front page, or just higher up in the list of stories. Gaming Digg has become a term, as companies and people try to get enough diggs to reach the front page. That ensures you enormous traffic to your site, which in turn can be so heavy that it actually will crash your server.
Digg has over 700,000 registered users as of today, and over 1,000,000 submitted stories. It’s without a doubt the biggest social bookmarking site, with reportedly more traffic than major technology sites such as Slashdot.
